Building a kampong of care: How Micron connects generations through purpose

 

As Singapore marks 60 years of nationhood, Micron Technology reflects the spirit of progress through its cutting-edge innovations in semiconductors, as well as its culture of inclusion, empathy, and action. 

 

Since establishing its presence in Singapore in 1998, Micron has grown into one of the country’s top employers in the semiconductor industry. Micron’s contributions go beyond boosting economic growth and technological leadership. The company has cultivated a strong culture of giving, where employees are empowered to give back to society in meaningful and lasting ways. 

 

This commitment shone through as Micron was recognised as a Champion of Good in 2025, an accolade reserved for organisations that exemplify impact across all areas of the Corporate Purpose Framework – from People and Environment to Governance and Society.

 

In alignment with SG60’s national themes of connecting Singaporeans, creating opportunities for giving, and contributing to the community, Micron mobilised its people, platforms, and partnerships to strengthen Singapore's social fabric.

Connecting generations with Micron Kampong

One of the company’s most distinctive contributions to community life is Micron Kampong, launched in 2023 as a senior befriending programme. The initiative was born out of Micron’s long-standing partnership with non-profit organisation Blossom Seeds and local grassroots groups in Sembawang Central. Together, they envisioned a modern-day “kampong” spirit, a community where no one is left behind and every generation feels valued.

 

Through Micron Kampong, employees engage with seniors who may be socially isolated, helping them reconnect with the community through activities that celebrate dignity, joy, and a sense of belonging. From house visits and festive gatherings to wellness workshops and digital literacy sessions, volunteers dedicate their time and energy to enriching seniors’ everyday lives.

 

In 2024 alone, Micron employees contributed over 1,300 volunteer hours, reaching more than 140 seniors across 14 events.

 

This programme demonstrates how a global technology company can take on a profoundly human role in community building, showing that innovation and compassion are not mutually exclusive.

Scaling impact with purposeful action

While Micron Kampong is a single programme, it embeds community engagement into the company’s culture. By creating a comprehensive calendar of activities, Micron ensures that employees from various roles and functions have opportunities to contribute in ways that resonate with them.

Seniors joined Micron volunteers in celebrating Singapore’s 60th birthday with a visit to the National Museum, reflecting on the nation’s journey while sharing their own stories and contributions.

Ready, Set, Gold! with Blossom Seeds

A charity walkathon that brings friends and partners together to promote healthy living and solidarity.

Combined appreciation event

A joint effort with Blossom Seeds to thank social and corporate volunteers for their ongoing dedication.

These touchpoints enrich the lives of seniors and enable Micron employees to see the tangible impact of their actions. It’s volunteering that goes beyond a one-time effort, embedding purpose into the rhythms of everyday corporate life. 

 

“Volunteering with Micron Kampong has been incredibly rewarding. Spending time with seniors through home visits and workshops has not only allowed me to brighten their day but also deepened my understanding of their experiences. It’s inspiring to see the joy and sense of belonging that simple acts of connection can create,” said Yacheng Tang, a Micron Kampong volunteer.
